Michael and Fabio - thanks for taking the time to respond. I expected the caliber of the SQL to be called into question J

The organization uses a tired old war horse for SQL (sorta query language) generation. So no surprise per Mike�s response.

Removing the constant expression from the order by clause is a pretty obvious way to avoid the problem.

I was hoping for some insight into why the aliased version works and the other does not.
