Subj:   Re: A question on Left Join

From:   Victor Sokovin

Hi Ulrich,

there might be a little confusion by reading the manual...

That's right. < Outer Table > left outer join < Inner Table >.

The difference between tables in an outer join is of course fundamental. WHERE conditions on the outer table should have absolutely clear consequences; conditions on the inner table are indeed open to different interpretations.

The OP used a WHERE condition on the Outer Table. So, Jonathan, your quotes related to the conditions on the Inner Table were not really relevant in this case. I should have pointed that out in my posting rather than dismissing the manual. I must admit I did not pay attention at the quotes as such, just assuming that they were posted as justification for the results observed by the OP. Jonathan was not the only contributor who tried to "explain" the results. Just go through the thread again: a few people confirming that they saw similar results and even posting how to "fix" them.

The query in the original posting should return at least 45 rows, period. There is no justification or explanation if it does not. It is then a bug which needs to be fixed.

Now, where is the OP to confirm that there was a problem in the first place?

Regards,

Victor
