I see. So, it works like a shortcut. Thanks a lot for the clarification. I think I am ready to understand the original question now.

I'd just mention that the syntax looked strange to me and I did a full-text search on the Teradata documentation site on the phrase "grant index". The search returned only pages where GRANT and INDEX were mentioned next to each other in a long list of keywords so this just confirmed my suspicion.

Thanks again for the explanation. Once again, this Forum beats all manuals and their search engines.
