I just would like to add one comment to the information passed by Kyle.

Although the data types CHAR and VARCHAR are similar (both can store characters and numbers) they are very different when speaking about the physical storage (Teradata V2R6.1 Database Design Manual - Chapter 15). The physical row format for tables containing VARCHAR columns is different than the physical row format for tables containing the same columns, but defined with the data type CHAR instead. That is the reason for the spool generation.
