I would recommend option 2, combined with compressing the fact columns on NULL or whatever the default value is. I assume that in some cases,
some of the fact elements will not exist.
The first reason that I would go with this option is the space savings that you will achieve vs. restating the keys in addition to the row
overhead that you will encounter with option 1. Secondly, whenever I see option 1 used in design, I usually see reports that are more closely
aligned with option 2. So, in the end, the queries end up denormalizing the data to get it to look like option 2.
