But this is not a comprehensive solution as you cannot use certain commands like set operators and so on just using select - it comes back with the following error:

3888: A SELECT for a UNION, INTERSECT or MINUS must reference a table.

Isnt there some equivalent to a dummy table which is available in other databases - a single column single record table?
