Randall, it is probably because CAST is not more powerful than the database itself. CAST does not open any new possibilities.

For what it might be worth, I think there is not much to add to what the OP had already summarized. Perhaps only a joke. As the OP mentioned the data is financial. Unless it is all in some exotic currency a shop requiring calculations in 21,2 format can afford an early upgrade to the TD version supporting such calculations or even sponsor faster development in this area.
