SQL Assistant will sometimes complain about single quotes in double-dash comments. The following will yield that error message:

     EXPLAIN
     SEL *
     FROM 
     -- I'd better not do this
     WHERE id = 100

I usually strip out all comments before attempting to run anything via SQL Assistant because it doesn't parse them correctly.
