If I may step in for the OP, I think I can answer why they use the union view and not the the union of views: to hide the physical complexity from the users. Good intention, of course, but as we know not all good intentions lead to good places.
Right; to use the bandwidth in a constructive way, I'll at least provide the reference for the horizontal partitioning details:
The OP might give it a go if he/she hasn't done it already. Who knows, it might help but I would not bet on it.
