Subj:   Re: Fastload in Unix

From:   Matthew Winter

Hi,

I totally agree with you Bob. Reuse of these kind of scripts is always good.

As for the scheduling, I was at one company that required all scheduling/dependency management/job control to be done manually, why when as you say there are plenty of products out there that can do a much better job. Mind you some of the scheduler products require you to put hooks into your scripts to allow you to pass back more information to the scheduler during its execution. But again if you are using a single wrapper script to execute one FASTLOAD/MULTILOAD/BTEQ script, this is not really needed. I guess it depends entirely on company standards. The one I am working for now, requires that each script be a complete process, which could mean the execution of 20 BTEQ scripts, and that they should be fully restartable at any step within the process. All good stuff, but means you do not have a single generic script, and you have to manage the dependencies yourself.

Either way, Unix is a very powerful tool, and allows you to do most things in 20 different ways, so I would first make a list of exactly what additional things other than execute a FASTLOAD/MULTILOAD/BTEQ script you need to do, and then come up with the most generic possible way of doing it. One that is going to make your life easier.

Anyway, thats enough of my babbling.
