I hate to be pedantic, but I think we need to get back to basics here.
In order to understand spool issues, we need to look at explains of the 2 queries so that we can see the choices the optimiser is making.
Adding a GROUP BY will definitely change the plan, and if random AMP samples are causing the redistribution of the big table on occasion, that
will lead to issues ...
