  I thought NCR's standard recommendation here would be the MDS (Meta Data Services) but I must admit I have never seen it in action anywhere. Did you (or anybody else) have a chance to look at it at some point?

Victor;

We took a look at MDS a while back. It certainly has a lot of promise but many customers have been reluctant to add the MDS application to their warehouse. Metadata management is a full time job and there are not a lot of people that know how to press the value proposition.

Like most projects, documentation is usually the last thing on the list and is oftentimes ignored. The value of systems documentation is very soft. It is hard to determine how much time and effort is saved when you have this information at your fingertips.

For the DBA side of the fence, MDS is not very viable. Why??? MDS is an Enterprise level installation. It will be installed on a windows based server running IIS and this takes the control of the application away from the DBA. Yet the DBA is still responsible for supporting and managing the Teradata systems.

This is why it is important to be able to comment the databases, entities and attributes at the database level with more depth than 255 characters. This is why comments in the views are very important. There is a lot that one needs to know about the views that do not have to be part of a data dictionary but are more in line with supporting the applications.

I really enjoy talking about the systems documentation side but I will stop for now...
