| Well, the visualization I suppose. It could save time with 20-page explain plans. Whether such plans deserve our full attention is of
course another question. Perhaps sometimes they do. | |
Precisely. I'm trying to look at some of the poorly performing queries for part of the DW I'm working. As I said earlier, for a particular
query that I'm looking at, the EXPLAIN plan is 1895 lines of output, encompasing 274 steps (including parallel steps). The EXPLAIN plan has all
the information I need, but I'd hoped that the Visual Explain could help speed up pinpointing the steps that needed a closer look. I've tracked
down the worst offenders in the EXPLAIN now and am moving forward on trying to mitigate the problem steps... but it took me a couple of hours
slogging through the execution plan to find the worst steps, then trace back the spools that led up to it, etc. I would expect the Visual Explain
to quicken that, letting me spend more time on determining the best solution.
| But I'm afraid Visual Explain in its current state is not yet mature enough to help with those lengthy explains. It is rather a
product for business users who would be willing to invest some time in optimization of their relatively simple queries but just cannot stand usual
explains. | |
That's sad to hear. I haven't really had a reason to look outside the textual EXPLAIN plans previously so I haven't had a chance to look
closely at Visual Explain. I'll probably still take a look at it when I get a chance...
| I see that Terry has provided a summary tool which might be useful in some situations | |
Thanks. After having taken a quick look at this, it seems to do what I'd primarily like to do. This should help alot.
