I guess part of the question is: what are you missing in EXPLAIN. You have the following information:

- detailed execution plan (step by step, in clear text; try this in Oracle for one)

- estimated size of results in each step (with information on the trustworthiness of the estimate)

- estimated cost of each step (again with likelihood/certainty)

- overall cost/size

- implicit understanding that this is the best plan from all available options based on the information available.

What else are you missing?
