But I'm going to hold the line on this one as long as possible. 'Criterion' is still a living word in English; in fact, there is a literary

Right you are. I think "criterion" is also used in the cycling world and it will keep living there.
I have given up on "data" as plural. Google "data is":"data are" = 31:18. In IT, the score must be much worse.
