The performance problem is likely to be caused by

The table being loaded being a SET table (i.e. no duplicate rows).

Thus with only a NUPI on the table

It will have to do a character by character check to ensure no duplicate rows are inserted.

Many firms overcome this by using a MULTISET table to load
