Thanks Dieter, I'll take a look at the options you mentioned.

To update my request for info: After discussing with my fellow DBAs, we may implement a secured "lookup table" that maps the real card number to a surrogate, so that thru a view we could join to our transaction table. This probably doesn't have any impact on how we would mask the card number, but I'd still consider any other ideas anyone may offer.
