Thanks all for the recommendations in regard to this. I haven't written a UDF before, but will investigate. We don't have a long-term
solution for encryption but these may suit us for now. We will indeed need to know the type of credit card.

p.s. I did realize that with the UDF a lookup table for real/surrogate card number shouldn't be necessary! But I also appreciate the
cautions about this approach.
