Just to react on the UDF suggestion: yes, but why bother if there are loads of utilities in the public domain? Probably not all of them
are good but there should be a few properly tested "canonical" ones. It is important to have a bug free utility because one of the aspects of
working with encrypted data is that it is difficult to test the data quality after encryption. If, for example, a buggy algorithm maps two
different values into one encrypted string, it might take some time before you discover it, and what do you do then? Some algorithms do not even
guarantee such uniqueness - one of the points to pay attention to while shopping for the right algorithm.
