Prior to R6, only the latter but not necessarily varbyte as many encryption algorithms use only "normal" chars and their output can be stored
as a usual string in TD.
I believe the built-in encryption becomes available as of R6 but probably only as an option. Somebody on the list was warning about the high
price they might be charging for it. I did not look further into this yet.
