Subj:   Re: Stats on Volatile table -- Possible??

From:   Michael Larkins

Hello Venkata:

Thank you for directing me to page 395 in the second edition of the Unleash the Power book. After finding the page, it did take me quite a while to figure out where you got the impression that you could collect statistics on a volatile table. However, I think I have your source of confusion.

Page 395 in chapter 19 is specifically talking about the CREATE TABLE statement for a volatile table. It indicates that there are several things you cannot do regarding a options which are not available. You are right in that COLLECT STATISTICS is not in the list. However, all the options that are listed are only options that ARE available on a CREATE TABLE statement for a real table.

Collecting statistics is not an option on the CREATE TABLE for a real table and therefore would not be an option by default on a CREATE TABLE for a volatile table nor a global table.

I hope this helps clear up your confusion. The only place that collect statistics is discussed in chapter 19 is in the section regarding global temporary tables.

I apologize for you confusion and hope you can see the difference with this explanation.

Best regards,

Michael Larkins
