Thanks for providing the edition number. It helps me pinpoint more closely what you are looking at for this discussion. If you look more closely in chapter 19, you will notice that global temporary tables start on page 392 in the first edition. The volatile tables are discussed and examples provided starting at page 390 through 392. Therefore, the information you are reading is definitely in regard to a global temporary table.
