Thank you for all of your suggestions. Seemingly, the only way to get good statistics is to completely replicate my tables (not very elegant and requires more IO, but hey, disk is cheap.)

As a longer term back-up plan, I've opened an Enhancement Request at www.teradata.com/teradata-partners/what_is/pac/PACForm.cfm . I'm proposing that Teradata provide us with the ability to collect statistics on a coalesced field involving one or more tables. Maybe this requirement can be resolved with a JI enhancement...or, maybe it warrants a new type of statistic. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
