Subj:   Re: SQL Formatting

From:   Dempsey, Mike

I am not aware of any other Teradata tools that format SQL, but there are third party tools available with this functionality. These tools probably format ANSI standard SQL however so they will probably miss some keywords - and maybe '/* */' style comments also.

Whether they are 'better' is rather subjective.

Queryman will highlight most keywords (SQL and SPL) and many of the more common functions. (Sum, Avg, etc.) If it is not highlighting keywords you need to highlight you can add these to the keywords file.

It will also add line breaks at (mostly) 'appropriate' points, and will color both comments and quoted strings. (These help you to spot missing end quotes or comment ends.)

The formatting is controled by (one or more) keyword files in which you can control:

The keywords that are highlighted

Whether the keyword should start a new line

The indentation level of this new line

There are different keyword files for each vendor database. The formatting (and keyword lists) has improved with each version of the application so exactly what it does depends on the version you are using.
