Again, while I can agree with your basic premise, I still would have to question if the type of subtle I/O failure you describe could just as likely affect reading data blocks from fallback.

Still, I would agree that in certain cases, this feature could be a good thing and might provide an additional level of error detection on highly sensitive/critical data that might otherwise be missing...Do you have any ballpark figures for the amount of overhead this feature exacts when enabled on a table?, all else being equal......
