It truly depends on the maturity of your data warehouse and its users. The more ad hoc or data mining access you have on your box the more freespace you will need for SPOOL requirements. As your freespace decreases you will also find that your free cylinders will begin to decrease. As this percentage of free cylinders approaches 15% or less you may begin to see mini cylpacks occur to claim freespace for users SPOOL. This will negatively impact the overall performance of the box as the frequency of the mini cylpacks increases.

You should be able to analyze your historical SPOOL usage combined with your average workload to determine about how much freespace you will need at any given point. The intersection of the SPOOL and FREESPACE is where you will begin to see problems.

I hope this helps.
