  I wish they would just implement a full YEAR TO SECOND interval datatype with the ability to directly CAST ( TIMESTAMP AS YEAR TO SECOND ) and vice versa.  


Hmm. A point in time is quite different from an interval, so I'm not sure how this would be possible. I suppose you could compute the number of nominal seconds from some arbitrary starting-point (e.g., 1600-01-01 00:00:00). Also, as you are probably aware, intervals that cross the month/day boundary are undefined because months are of different lengths. Or am I missing something?
