Subj:   Re: Teradata on a Linux Platform

From:   Matthew Winter

Hi,

I think they are also nervous about Bynet and other pieces they hold, these should be protected, and I think the module is a good way of that for now. Other companies (one electronic microscope maker I can think of) have gone this route and been happy with the results.

Why be nervous, why not maximise the returns on their intellectual property. If the BYNET was ported correctly to a Linux platform, why not sell it outside of the bounds of Teradata, and compete with the likes of Infiniband in the HPC market. This is a growing market with new Linux HPC super computers appearing daily, containing hundreds of nodes. Has to be worth something.

In fact, they could embrace the Open Source community, become a member of the Infiniband Trade Association, and offer the BYNET as a hardware solution for the Infiniband Architecture. By doing so, they suddenly have all of the work currently being done on the Infiniband SDK and Kernel enhancements made available to them, which could reduce the effort required on the part of Teradata.

Regards

Matthew Winter
