This topic (in different forms) comes up quite often here. One of the latest threads was this one:

The example there shows that if from the logic of your application you have an idea of the maximum number of occurrences of a certain character in the string you can build a satisfying solution with the means that are already available in TD.

There are many other threads in the archives (usually two-three threads every month) that handle more general or more specific cases.
