Anomy,
A good compromise, if you are on V2R5, is to use the 'Collect Stats using Sample' option. This is very fast (couple of seconds.) Otherwise,
if this column will always have the same value, you should be able to collect regular statistics just once, and then never collect them again
(assuming you collect stats at the column level, and not the table level.)
Because random amp sampling will never result in anything better than a low confidence step, it might be beneficial for the optimizer to make
us of statistics on this column if it is involved in queries which join multiple tables together.
