For the sake of this discussion, I am using the phrase 'nearline storage' to refer to the process/solution/technology for moving rarely-used
data outside the DATABASE and to a cheaper storage system to alleviate database performance and to reduce (storage) costs. I am also assuming
that such a technology/solution would make it transparent to an user i.e. when a query attempts to read the archived data, then automatic
processes kick in to retrieve the data and respond to the query - thus the user only sees a delay in the response of his query.
Are these such solutions for Teradata? for Oracle?
If anyone has come up with a homegrown solution using Teradata's ARC utility, what have you done to automate it?
Any other thoughts are welcome.
Thanks.
