Subj:   Re: Teradata On Windows

From:   Schroter, Andrew

Can someone tell me how the disk space is connected to the database when Teradata is on Windows?

Answer: Through direct FC. Check with NCR for specifics

We have a large SAN (Hitachi?), could this be used as the table space if we went to a Windows version?

Answer: No, TD doesn't support SANS for disk, they do for tape. They do, for large cliques, provide dedicated Fibre Channel Switches. In addition, Teradata up to this time has only offered support for EMC and the LSI Logic Based Storage Arrays. Their strategy is to focus on a strictly limited storage platform to avoid significant engineering, inventory, and maintenance costs.

Is there significant performance loss between UNIX and Windows given the same CPU and RAM size?

There hasn't been much in the recent past. Don't know what the story is today, but wouldn't expect it to be much different.

How does the BYNet connect between Windows servers?

Using the same BYNET adapter cards and switches as in the UNIX environment. Note, the Servers/node configuration NCR offers in the MPP environment are the same.

  Is each server a Node?

Yes, when configured in MPP. SMP, single node systems are support on any MICROSOFT HAL specification compliant server (single node) How large a database can Windows "practically" handle 5 TB, 10 TB? Same as UNIX, I imagine. I don't believe that NCR has any limitations on how big a Windows system can get. You may want to ask NCR what their largest Windows customer's system is today.

AGS
