As far as I know if I declare the whole column as Unicode _all_ the characters in it, including the former Latin ones, will be stored
internally in the 16-bit format as opposed to the 8-bit Latin character set. That's the factor of 2, and that's what I meant when I said it
might be expensive if only a small part of the column was non-Latin. Is that right?

Thank you for listing the pros and cons of this format. BYTE might do what I want, i.e., get the data in and out and let the client
interpret it, but the cons you mentioned make it very inflexible. I think I will keep looking for other options.
