Thank you for the suggestion. The idea of the union view did not look good to me either and I think I feel much more confident about your 'Unicode extra column'. Modifications in the loading jobs will be trivial. Most of the views are user/language restrictive and will require minimal changes. The rest will have to be tested. The columns in question are pure text descriptions and hopefully will never be used for any joins so I don't expect changes in execution plans mentioned in the 'Unicode costs' thread.

Once again, thank you for the idea. If I don't find any 8-bit workaround, I will definitely explore it further!
