We had a similar kind of problem on our Win2k box wherein the database just behaved oddly and the Bteq gave the RDBMS Crashed message.

The cause was found to be the number of connections on the Win2K box which exceeded the number of ports that could be utilized on the box.

Try doing a netstat -a on the box at the time of the problem and see whether you have a lots of connections utilising one particular single port on the box.
