Surely one of the core attractions of Teradata is that NCR supply most of the components - hardware, OS, DBMS and load/management utilities?

Given that the TTU software is a core component of the Teradata proposition it is introducing an element of risk into an otherwise (largely) well behaved platform to go down the DIY or 3rd party route. Why bother?

Cost alone is not sufficient justification, IMHO. If you can't afford the tyres, don't buy the Ferrari! You can bet your bottom dollar that NCR will collect their pound of flesh elsewhere if a site successfuly avoids buying the load utilities. Just watch those 'special prices' and discounts disappear next time an upgrade or lease renewal is imminent.

FWIW, I have first hand experience of non-Teradata load utilties and it was not a smooth experience.
