From:   Dempsey, Mike

The 'References' menu requires access to the 'CreateText' column of the TVM table. This is a potentially very large character string.

My guess is that it is not included in the Tables view since many people use 'Select *' to access these views... and this would return a large amount of data.

I am not aware of any security issues with granting select on TVM, as opposed to Tables. The main difference is the CreateText column (and RequestText) which the user can probaly retreive through a SHOW statement anyway.

Note that you also need select access to the DBase table for this functionality. If you have Select access to DBase (as opposed to Databases) some features will also perform faster, and you will be able to use the:

Only Databases
Databases & Users with Permspace

options on the Select a Data Source dialog. (Without access to DBase Teradata Administrator will always read all databases and users.)

If you do create your own view (and modify the winddi.def file to match), so that you do not have to grant access to TVM, you will still need access to DBase ... since Teradata Administrator sets the menu visibility based on access to this table.

As an additional note on security ... there is also an alternative 'winddi.def' file (called 'winddix.def') that can be used if you wish to deploy the product to 'restricted' users. This file will force the product to use the 'X' views instead of the standard views. This means that the user will only see those objects that they own, or have access to. (Refer to the 'setup.sql' file for more informatuion.)
