The optimum number of sessions is

One per AMP vproc for archive
two per AMP vproc for recovery.

How ever, there is no specific rule of thumb. It depends on number of other factors such as memory, processing power ..etc (i.e system resources).

ARC connects all the sessions indicated in the sessions parameter at one time, any connected sessions that are not actually used in the operation result in wastage of system resources.

You can try by mentioning one, two or three sessions per AMP vproc and see the difference in the time taken.
