If you want to check an SQL statement, but not execute it, you can always just prepare it. BTEQ doesn't have a way for you to do this, but you could write a very simple application (either ODBC or CLIv2) that took your SQL, did a PREPARE operation, and reported any errors (which would include syntax errors).
