Dave is on the right path here. Keep the actual tables and everything else seperate. For an interesting writeup, see NCR white paper dated Oct 2002 ver 1 Disaster Recovery Using Permanent Journals. It's not on the subject but contains an architecture description in the early part that supports or recommends this direction.
