Our DBA's promote DDL from TEST to PRODUCTION.

I think it important that the people doing the code/test should be different than those doing production. In our case, the DBA's are not doing most of the coding. If your DBA's code/test the DDL, you are probably better having someone else promote it. (My opinion)

The most important piece of the process is the advance communication. Everyone needs to know that something is changing. Sometimes people who you would think are unaffected know something that might need to be checked.
