Thomas Your point is well made. On the face of it, you are absolutely correct. Like many things in life, there is always a however or exception!! We have used this index in most of our model and it works well for us. However, due to business imperatives, we will now receive data that cannot be keyed using our current application of indexes process. In many cases, the percentage of unkeyable data will be miniscule but overtime, these nulls will cause clumps. As we use these keys in the rest of the model, we should continue to do so as the join performance is excellent. The negative indexes will not join into the rest of the model and this is what we want (which is similar to, but not exactly the same as, having them as nulls). The negative indexes do however give better spread. Finally, I appreciate your comments. Thanks Frank
