Subj:   Admin Comment - Polls and Surveys

From:   John Hall

From time to time, I'm asked if a poll or survey could be distributed to the TeradataForum. My general stance is that the function of the Forum is to promote discussion about Teradata and by it's nature, a survey isn't discussion.

Many of these proposals involve a website which has a some kind of form which is to be filled-out. Frequently, there's no indication that the Forum will ever hear the results of the survey or that there will be any follow-up discussion about the results. Such surveys run contrary to the purpose of the Forum and I have always refused the request.

I've always suggested to these people that they change it into something that can be discussed by the group. As far as I can remember, this has only occurred once.

In the case of Frank's proposal, I don't mind discussion on this Forum that has the purpose of encouraging a vendor to provide a better product/service.

I agree with David that the more voices that speak-up and send their feelings to CA, the more likely it will be that CA will make changes. My own feelings is that trying to reduce user dissatisfaction to a survey will end-up with a set of answers that will be forwarded by a single person. No matter how many people participate in the survey, it won't have the impact as if those same people had contacted CA directly.

So what I would suggest is for those interested to discuss how you feel about Erwin, as it applies to the Teradata world. As you find points that you want to express to CA, then forward the post to your CA representative (and whoever else has influence) underlining the points that you feel to be important to you.

Being who I am, I think that this Forum is an excellent place to express your opinion about anything in the Teradata world (within the boundaries outlined in the Rules of Conduct, of course).

John
