We too use the Fastload / Insert - Select method at my site for data loading. And we use no secondary indexes yet, as the maintenance
overhead has just not been worth it. The balance for us is ETL time verses query response time. And right now our query patterns allow us
to avoid secondary indexes for the obvious reasons. I reevaluate this decision regularly but have not yet been able to justify adding a
secondary index to a very large, daily-loaded table.
If your really comfortable with your data, perhaps you could change the table to not be a set table (assuming it presently is)? I have
seen that improve insert performance greatly, but have not tried it yet with secondary indexes.
