When last I looked it just comes down to how much work you are willing to accept for recovery. The longer you take between checkpoints the longer it might potentially take to recover should a crash/outage/whatever occur. With 15 minutes as the checkpoint then 15 minutes should be the maximum recovery time -- at least in theory.
