Subj:   Re: Veritas backup for Teradata: The elusive Access Module Error #34

From:   Bergman, Ysbrand

Frank,

I can't answers this one in detail because I don't have all the info in front of me.

Some comments:

Media timeout: 0 means that we will wait an infinite period until the mount request is satisfied.

but....

Client read timeout: 900

This translates into: If we do not see any management traffic between the client component and the master server we will assume that the job is no longer running.

And this is exactly what happens: After 900 seconds the client component aborts and it effectively kills arcmain. The error 34 arc 0805 means that something is going wrong outside arc. In this case the NetBackup client process aborts, and that is what is going wrong outside arc.

Client read timeout can be changed in the bp.conf file on the master server or using the NetBackup GUI. We recommend that it is at least 3600, Otherwise backups might fail during large database objects processing.

If you look at the database extension GUI on the admin client the job will show "in progress". This is a bogus state, under certain circumstances the NetBackup database extension is not able to determine that the backup was aborted.

Once again: (I'm sorry but I keep on saying this): If you see an arc 0805 error 34 in the arclogs it means that something outside arc is going wrong. This might be a communications error between NetBackup components, it might be a tape read or write error, it might be a timeout. Or in other words, if you see this error it means that you (or your NCR-Teradata service representative) need to look further for the real cause of the failure..

I know that the way database extensions are added to NetBackup is causing some confusion. It takes normally quite a bit of time to explain the way it works (and to understand it).

Any questions? I'm more than happy to answer them (either on or offline).

Regards,

Ysbrand
