Hi Dave,

I understand your point, but see it from my side:

When Jay and I started the TDATA-L List, we wanted an open technical resource so that people who were involved with the Teradata product had a place to discuss their issues/problems. In this day and age, from birth to grave, everybody is bombarded with people hawking their products.

What's missing is some place where I can say that I'm having a problem and ask whether anybody is aware of something that I'm not. In turn, if I can help somebody else with a problem that they are having, then I'm having a pretty good day. It's criminal that people can't get help for simple problems unless they are willing to spend copious quantities of money.

Those with products should also have budgets for promoting their products. The TDATA-L List is operated on a shoe-string budget directly from my wallet and I don't want to spend any of my very meager funds to promote the product of anybody else.

Allowing the discussion of things as innocent "What's the best SQL book" creates problems that I don't share with the List. I regularly intercept posts promoting products. All too often, when I notify the person that I'm not going to allow their post, I end-up in long-winded arguments over whether they should be allowed to post or can I make an exception just this one time.

By allowing the innocent posts, I find those posts are now being used as a reason why the product promotion posts should be allowed as well. I'm losing substantial amounts of time with these arguments and they have to come to an end. To that end, I'm going to minimize the discussion of products on the List as much as possible. I wish that I had a better answer, but some people can't help but corrupt something offered in all innocence and turn it to their own advantage.

I hope you understand,

John
