Subj:   Re: Locks on table

From:   Christopher Platt

One more bit of trivia about the TJ.........

The transient journal does not stop filling up when it uses all the space in the DBC. A long long time ago when I first learned Teradata I was under the impression that if use all the space in DBC your system hung and died. NOT TRUE. The TJ just continues to grow and grow and grow. We used to keep the allocation on DBC at about 50 gb when we were using about 23 gb. We thought that this would limit a run-away Transient Journal. One morning I came in and the TJ was 423 GB big. NCR estimated something like 9 weeks to roll all this info back. I voted to let it go... they convinced me this was not practical........ It wasn't pretty. We elected to restart the box, which of course trashed the table and forced us into a restore condition. We then wrote our own utility to monitor the TJ.... When it hits a certain size we get paged.....
