Subj:   Survey... Mainframe tape and Silo tape based backups?

From:   Christopher Platt

How many other sites would be interested in being able to backup their system on either mainframe based tapes OR silo based tapes and then be able to move the tapes to the other system for restore?

Ideally we would like to seperate our Test and Production boxes to two different locations so that our Test box could serve as a Disaster Recovery Hot Site for us. Our Production box would remain channel attached to the mainframe. The other box would be channel extended. When last I tried channel extension Teradata backups they were very slow. If we purchased a Silo for the Test box for Teradata backups we would like to be able to take a backup tape from the mainframe and recover it using the Silo in the event of a disaster. That function does not exist today.

It is my understanding that there was a way to do this with the old ASF2 product....but not the new "Net" suite of tools.....Does anyone else see any value in this.

When last we looked at Silos and software we were in the neighboorhood of 750k - 1mill.....A neighborhood that I would love to own a house in.... but not a good neighborhood to be in when you need to buy two of something !

Anybody doing channel extended backups??
