Phil,
I would think that if you don't have enough space to recreate the table, you probably will run out of space altering it also. There are
others on this list who can comment better but I assume you don't have 200Gb available either in the database or on the system. If your
space constraint is at the database level, my reply probably doesn't apply. Assuming you are short on system space, as the table is altered
it journals so it can recover in case the command fails. Presumably the journal would take up as much space as the original table.
